How to Configure Sonicwall Tz170

SonicWALL's TZ 170 firewall is a multi-layered security appliance that affords Internet protection for the computers on your local area network (LAN). In addition to its deep packet inspection firewall, the TZ 170 also provides anti-virus and anti-spyware capabilities, as well as intrusion prevention services (IPS). You can add support for virtual private networking (VPN) and content filtering. The initial license covers 10 workstations, but by adding licenses you can cover an unlimited number of computers. Robust features make the TZ 170 an enterprise-level Internet protection device.

Instructions

  1. Set Up SonicWALL

    • 1

Plug the power cord into an appropriate appliance to power on the SonicWALL TZ 170. Proceed to the next step when "Test" light goes off.

    • 2

Plug either end of an Ethernet cable into your Internet router or modem. Plug the other end of the same cable into the TZ 170's WAN port. The WAN light on the front of the TZ170 comes on indicating a good connection.

    • 3

Plug either end of the second Ethernet cable into the "LAN" port on your computer, and the other end into "LAN port 1" on the back of the SonicWALL. Wait for "Port 1" light on the front of the SonicWALL to come on before proceeding.

    • 4

Click "Start," "Control Panel," "Network and Sharing Center," and "Change Adapter Settings." Right-click on the "Local Area Connection" icon and click "Properties." Double-click "TCP/IPv4" and in the properties dialog click "Use the following IP address." Set the IP address and subnet mask to 192.168.168.30 and 255.255.255.0. Click "OK" twice and close the "Network Connections" dialog.

    • 5

Turn off your pop-up blocking in your browser. For Internet Explorer, click "Tools," "Pop-up Blocker," and "Turn Off Pop-up Blocker." For Firefox, click "Tools," "Options," "Content," uncheck the "Block pop-up windows" box, and click "Close."

    Configure SonicWALL TZ 170

    • 6

Open Internet Explorer and type "192.168.168.168" in the URL address box. The number is the default IP address of the TZ 170. Press "Enter" to start the "SonicWALL Setup Wizard." Click "Next" to advance to the "Change Password" dialog.

    • 7

Change the factory default admin password ("password") by entering a password of your choosing in the password box. Record your new admin password, and store it in a safe location. Click "Next" to advance to the "Change Time Zone" dialog.

    • 8

Click a time zone for the appliance from the time zone from the list. Click to check the box next to the "Daylight Savings Time" item to allow the TZ 170 to automatically adjust for Daylight Savings Time. Click "Next" to advance to the "WAN Network Mode" dialog.

    • 9

Click either "Static IP" or "DHCP," based on your ISP's network requirements. Click "PPPoE" if you need a username and password to login to your ISP, or "PPTP" if you are required to dial into an authentication server. Click "Next" to advance to the second "WAN Network Mode" dialog.

    • 10

Type in your ISP-provided IP and network information. Depending on the ISP network information you provided on the previous "WAN Network Mode" dialog, you will be asked to enter information on several network configuration screens. Click "Next" to advance through the dialogs, until you arrive on the "LAN Settings" dialog.

    • 11

Enter your LAN IP address and subnet mask in the fields provided, or leave the default information, which works well in most circumstances. Leave the "Enable Windows Networking Support" box checked. Click "Next" to advance to the "LAN DHCP Settings" dialog.

    • 12

Click "Next" to accept the TZ 170 LAN DHCP defaults, or provide your own settings. As in previous steps, the settings depend on the information your ISP gave you, and your network configuration. If you want to leave the TZ 170 DHCP server enabled, enter an address range or accept the defaults and click "Next" to advance to the "SonicWALL Configuration Summary" dialog.

    • 13

Review your TZ 170 settings. Click "Cancel" if you want to discard the settings and restart the configuration process. Click "Apply" to apply your configuration settings and advance to the "Setup Wizard Complete" dialog.

    • 14

Click "Restart" to reboot the TZ 170. When the "Test" light goes off, your TZ 170 is configured to protect the computers on your network.
