How to Hook a Laundry Sink to a Standpipe
Adding a laundry sink to your laundry room can bring you a great deal of benefits. You will not have to track around the house to fill buckets. It also gives you the option of an extra place to soak clothes and clean those nasty paintbrushes instead of in the kitchen sink. If you have hand washables you can plug the sink and use a washboard to clean those instead of running the risk of putting them in the washer where they can get damaged. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Tape measure
- Two inch pipe. (Length depends on how far it is to the stand pipe)
- Y conector
- P trap (This is for under the sink from the drain on the sink to the exit line. This stops gasses from entering the house)
- 90 degree elbows (This is to be determined by your particular measurements and layout)
- Pipe cement (If you are using PVC pipe, use the cement that is required for that, otherwise use regular pipe cement if you are using metal)
- Hacksaw
- 45 degree Elbow (This will be the last piece that connects into the Y-connector and the drain pipe from the sink)

1
Measure the height of your laundry sink before you purchase it. You are going to install the sink to an existing line for the washer and you are going to want to have at least two feet from the bottom of the standpipe to the Y-connector. You will want the drain that is attached to the bottom of the sink to be two feet from the ground.

2
Place the sink in the spot it will be stationed. Measure where the sink is going to be placed to the standpipe. Make sure that you measure for corners if necessary.

3
Attach the P-trap to the drain on the sink. Put a liberal amount of pipe cement on both the P-trap and the drain from the sink. Attach them together.
-
4
Measure two feet up from the standpipe and cut with the hacksaw. Measure the length of the Y-connector and cut that distance off of the top part of the standpipe. This will keep the standpipe at its established height. Secure the Y-connector to the standpipe. Use liberal amounts of pipe cement to assure that the pipe will be tight. Connect the top of the standpipe to the top of the Y-connector. Again use liberal amount of pipe cement.
-
5
Determine the distance to the distance to the Y-connector. Attach the horizontal drain pipe to the P-Trap with the pipe cement. Attach the 45 degree angle connector to the horizontal pipe and then connect it to the standpipe.
-
6
Allow all the portions of the pipe system to dry for a couple of hours and then test.

Tips & Warnings
If you have to use 90 degree angles to go around a corner make sure that you measure that distance and cut it off of the drain pipe.
