How to Improve Dodge Dakota Fuel Efficiency
The price of gas may not be as high as it was during the summer of 2008, but at over $3 a gallon (as of 2010), it is still high and drivers may want to find ways to get more miles to the gallon. The Dodge Dakota averages about 14 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city and 19 mpg on the highway. If you can improve these figures even by a small amount, you will see significant savings over the year.

1
Service the engine routinely. Check the spark plugs, and if they show signs of being corroded, change them. Replace regular spark plugs with performance spark plugs to improve fuel economy. Inspect the air filter, which should be white. If it is dark, change it. Install a high flow air filter system to improve gas mileage.

2
Check the tires regularly to ensure that they are inflated to the correct pressure. Check the owner's manual for the manufacturer's recommended level. Over or under inflated tires decrease fuel economy.

3
Secure the tailgate in the upright position and cover the truck bed. A cover costs a few hundred dollars, but according to 4wheelparts.com, improved aerodynamics can result in a 10 percent reduction in fuel consumption.
-
4
Use the air conditioning sparingly. Opening a window instead will use less gasoline.
-
5
Drive within the speed limit. Driving 80 mph uses twice as much gas as driving at 30 mph.
-
6
Switch the engine off if you are not in traffic and you are going to be stopped for more than 30 seconds. Allowing the engine to idle unnecessarily wastes fuel.
-
7
Remove excess weight. According to a Canadian Auto Authority report, driving with 100 lbs. of excess weight reduces your gas mileage by 2 percent.
