How to Winterize a Yamaha 225 VMax

Whether you store your boat indoors or on the water during winter months, your outboard engine must be properly treated beforehand. Winterizing your Yamaha 225 VMax is key to prolonging its life and maintaining its overall value. Although most boat dealers will winterize it for you at a low rate, you can save money by performing the task on your own. Once your engine is winter-ready you can relax knowing it is likely to avoid the damaging effects of the harsh weather conditions.

Instructions

    • 1

Flush the Yamaha 225 VMax engine with clean water. Allow the water to drain from the engine. Wipe off any dirt from the exterior with a clean dry towel.

    • 2

Remove your prop and stop switch lanyard cord from your engine.

    • 3

Drain any fuel from the fuel hoses, fuel pump, and carburetor. Any leftover fuel can evaporate and leave damaging deposits behind.

    • 4

Treat the engine with storage oil, also known as fogging oil. This is an aerosol spray used to prevent rusting. Use two ounces per cylinder.

    • 5

Apply a water resistant grease to the propeller shaft. Grease the prop shaft and its threads with wheel bearing grease.

    • 6

Change the gear oil from your lower unit of your engine.

    • 7

Apply the water resistant grease to any moving parts of the engine. This includes the nuts, bolts, and joints.

    • 8

Apply a thin coat of oil or automotive wax to the exterior of your engine to give it a nice shine.

    • 9

Store your freshly cleaned and winter-ready engine in a dry place in a vertical position.
