How to Install Motion Detector Systems
Motion detectors are commonly used with home security systems to scare intruders and large animals. Two types of motion detector are commonly available: a passive infrared sensor (PIR) and a dual-technology sensor. Thanks to modern technology, they can be hard-wired or wireless. There are a large number of motion detector manufacturers. The finer points of installation are covered in the instructions provided with the motion detector, but the basic installation procedure is the same for all varieties. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Assess the needs of the property and decide where the motion detector should be mounted. Outdoor motion detectors should cover areas that are likely entry-points to the property and indoor they should be directed at hallways, stairwells and other parts of the home intruders are likely to go.
-
2
If the motion detectors are PIR, make sure they aren't activated by bright windows or strong heat sources. PIR detectors activate from movement and heat sources, which means windows, radiators and air vents can all potentially set off the detector. Plan accordingly.

If the alarm system is hard-wired, run wires to each of the areas the detectors will be mounted. Refer to the instructions that came with the security system for wiring information. Wireless motion detector systems will typically come with their own power, or power can be routed to the system from the nearest electrical outlet.
-
4
Install the motion detector mounting brackets. Drill starter holes into a wall stud. Install two-inch screws and tighten them down securely with a screwdriver. Mount the motion detector in the bracket and adjust the aim. Sensors should be installed at least two meters above floor level. Outdoor motion sensors should be mounted two and a half meters above the ground or higher.
-
5
Attach the fixture if the motion detector has one. Wire the fixture to the same power source as the detector. Some motion detectors allow wireless control of a remote fixture. If this is the case, program the two units to function together as per the instructions. This usually entails holding down a button on each unit simultaneously.
-
6
Test the system by walking through the area. Some motion detector systems have a setting to adjust sensitivity. This is useful if there are small pets.

Tips & Warnings
Some security systems require any additions be installed by a licensed contractor. Contact the security company to find out if motion detectors can be attached to the security system by the homeowner.
