How to Remove Electrical Burn Odors

Constance Courduff

The air freshener market was valued at $4.7 million globally in 2007, proving that many people are concerned about how their homes smell. Sometimes household mishaps, such as electrical issues, cause unpleasant odors.

Old or faullty wiring can cause electrical fires.

Electrical burning smells can be a sign of overheated appliances or other electrical issues and should be attended to immediately for safety reasons. However, after the cause of the odor has been rectified, there are ways to return the area back to its normal pleasant-smelling state.

  1. Open all windows and doors. This will get the air moving around in the affected area.

  2. Pour vinegar into a shallow bowl and place it in the area for 24 hours.

  3. Place three to four pieces of charcoal on a towel or in a bowl. Place the bowl in the affected area for 24 hours. The charcoal will absorb the odor.

  4. Scatter baking soda over carpet and furniture. Allow the baking soda to sit for 1 to 2 hours and vacuum.

  5. Tip

Place lemon juice or lemon peels in the bowl of vinegar to neutralize the vinegar smell.
