How to Remove Spoiler From Vehicles

by Contributing WriterUpdated June 12, 2017

The spoiler on the Vehicles is installed by drilling holes into the trunk lid, and then securing the spoiler with adhesive and heavy-duty bolts. Removing a spoiler is much simpler than installing one. You can remove the spoiler from your Vehicles in about an hour with the right tools. Before you begin, you should realize that the process will leave holes in your trunk that will need to be plugged up.

Open the trunk lid to allow easy access to the spoiler. This can be done using your Mustang's key, or by using the remote trunk release that is located inside the vehicle.

Remove the trim pieces or plastic plugs on the interior of the trunk lid. This will allow you to access the bolts that hold the spoiler onto the trunk lid.

Locate the bolts that hold your spoiler onto the trunk lid. Factory Mustang GT spoilers are usually held on by four bolts. If your car is equipped with an aftermarket spoiler, the bolt setup may be different.

Remove the bolts from the spoiler using a metric socket. It is helpful to remove the bolts on the left and right sides first, and the center bolts last. This allows you to hold onto the spoiler as you loosen the bolts, and avoid damaging your Mustang's paint or rear window.

Remove the spoiler from the top of your Mustang's trunk lid. You may wish to have a friend help you with this, to keep the spoiler from slipping and damaging your paint.

Items you will need

  • Metric socket set

Open your trunk and remove the trunk liner from the top portion of the trunk lid. Examine the spoiler's mounting assembly to make sure you have the correct tools to remove it. The exact assembly will depend on what type of Hyundai vehicle you have and whether the spoiler is a factory-installed spoiler or an aftermarket-installed spoiler.

Remove the spoiler mounting bolts. Wing spoilers usually have four bolts (two on each side) and standard spoilers usually have five (one in the middle).

Close the trunk and apply a heat gun or hair dryer around the base of the spoiler where it meets the trunk lid. Since the spoiler is attached with strong adhesive and bolts, you need to heat the adhesive so you can remove the spoiler.

Take the spoiler off and set it aside. If you have used the heat gun or dryer properly, it will come off fairly easily.

Clean the mounting area thoroughly to remove the adhesive residue. Normal automotive soap will not work; instead, use a solvent such as Goo Gone.

Closely examine the size of the holes in your trunk. Purchase the right size plugs to install in the holes until you can have the holes filled by a professional. The plugs will keep it from raining into your trunk.

Items you will need

  • Pliers

  • Socket wrench

  • Heat gun or hair dryer

  • Goo Gone or similar solvent

  • Plugs (for trunk holes)

Pop the trunk and locate the wiring harness that runs from the trunk to the spoiler for a third brake light. Unplug this harness using your hands, or if it's connected with aftermarket wiring, cut the wires using the wire cutters.

Locate the screw holes that secure the spoiler to the trunk. These are typically out toward the edges of the trunk, and generally come in pairs for each side. Unbolt one bolt from each side of the spoiler using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, leaving two bolts to hold it in place.

Lower the deck lid so you can still get a ratchet underneath it, but so the spoiler is close to parallel with the ground. Have your assistant hold the spoiler while you unbolt it using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Once it's unbolted, have your assistant gently lift the spoiler off of the trunk.

Shut the trunk and place the hole plugs on top of the holes left by the spoiler so you won't have leaks in the trunk. Clip into place. Hole plugs can be found at any local hardware store.

Items you will need

  • Assistant

  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set

  • Wire cutters

  • Hole plugs in varying sizes
