1
Find an established local charity that will accept donations for distribution to needy children. This could include branches of the Salvation Army, Goodwill, Help and Hope organizations, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, battered women shelters and government agencies such as the Department of Human Services. You can find contact numbers for all of these organizations in your local phone book.

2
Set up collection boxes all around your neighborhood where people can drop off donations of clothes, books, hygiene items, school supplies, canned food goods and toys. These can include local schools, churches, daycare agencies and even restaurants, pediatrician offices and other businesses. Arrange for someone at each location to contact you by phone when the box is full so you may collect the donations and distribute them them to the charities that benefit needy children in your area. Schools often get in on the collection process by encouraging students to bring donations of clothes or toys they no longer can wear or play with.

Make up colorful fliers with information about collection sites and distribute them around town so people will know where to take their donations. Post fliers at local churches, supermarkets and schools. You may also check with local radio stations to see if they will make announcements free of charge about the location sites. Some local newspapers will also run the information as a free announcement on the community calendar. Some businesses may also allow you to post fliers on their doors or bulletin boards.

Check the classified section in your newspaper to see where local yard sales and garage sales are being held. Some individuals may be willing to donate any items that don't sell and you can collect them after the sale.
