How to Troubleshoot an HP LaserJet 1012

The HP LaserJet 1012 normally produces black and white printouts at a maximum resolution of 600 by 1200 dots per inch. The printer uses powdered ink, called toner, to recreate text and pictures from digital documents. The printer magnetically attracts the toner powder to specific spots on the paper, applying a high amount of pressure and heat to the page to set or fuse the toner on the page. If you notice abnormalities with the printer's operation, you can troubleshoot for the cause.

Instructions

  1. Specks on Printouts

    • 1

Remove all of the paper from the printer's input tray. Open a new ream of paper labeled for use with laser printers, and load the fresh paper in the printer's input tray.

    • 2

Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and wait 15 minutes to allow the printer to cool. Open the top cover of the printer and remove the toner cartridge.

    • 3

Clean the inside of the printer using a microfiber cloth. Spin the rollers inside the printer to make sure that you clean off all toner dust. Replace the toner cartridge and plug the power cord back in.

    • 4

Remove all of the paper from the printer's input tray and load a single transparency sheet. Click the "Start" or "Windows" logo button on the computer's task bar, and select "Programs," the "HP" folder and click on "HP Toolbox."

    • 5

Click the tab labeled "Troubleshooting" and click the button labeled "Print Quality Tools." Click "Cleaning Page" and wait as the printer feeds the transparency. Retrieve it from the output tray and throw it away.

    Frequent Paper Jams

    • 6

Remove all of the paper from the printer's input tray. Fan through the paper stack to make sure no pages stick together.

    • 7

Throw away any damaged sheets of paper, including torn, creased or dog-eared sheets. Tap the paper stack against the hard surface of a desk or table to line up all the edges of the sheets of paper, and slide the stack back into the input tray.

    • 8

Remove any paper that sits above the maximum height line on the inside of the input tray. Switch the paper inside the printer with a different brand of paper if jams continue to occur.

    • 9

Unplug the printer's power cord and let the printer sit for 15 minutes to cool it down. Open the printer's top cover and remove the toner cartridge, and open the printer's back door.

    • 10

Spin the rollers in the printer, and remove any small bits of paper or foreign objects such as paper clips. Replace the toner cartridge, and close the back door and top cover. Plug the power cord back in.
