Change to a Green Building

Green building is beneficial for the environment, since it reduces waste and greenhouse gas emissions, conserves natural resources and improves air and water quality. It also increases energy efficiency and reduces costs by improving productivity and decreasing operating costs. Although green technology is most effective when integrated into new construction, green building techniques can be implemented at any time in the life of a building. Since 1990, the quantity and quality of green building materials has increased. Governments and green organizations have also taken steps to implement green building techniques and practices. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Attend workshops and educate yourself about green buildings in order to create a goal-oriented plan. Read the International Code Council's "International Green Construction Code" for detailed outlines of green building practices. The EPA's "Green Building" page also offers more general information about green building in the United States. Visit green buildings in your area and look into the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED green building certification program.

    • 2

Look into funding opportunities offered by the EPA and other local organizations for financial assistance. You might be able to get a tax refund for certain green building additions or appliances.

    • 3

Replace lighting with energy-efficient light bulbs and fixtures. According to Lowe's Commercial Services, replacing light fixtures may be challenging, but it will result in enormous energy savings, since older fixtures may be 50 percent less efficient than current systems.

    • 4

Upgrade your heating or cooling system, plumbing, and any other appliances in your building. Select Energy Star approved models for maximum quality and possible tax refunds.

    • 5

Update building materials such as insulation, roof, doors, windows and skylights. Once again, Energy Star offers a variety of green-certified products for maximum efficiency.
