Hypnosis is the act of placing an individual into a specific mental state. The method via which people are triggered to enter this state is called "hypnotic induction." Once a person is hypnotized, the power of suggestion becomes very strong, and he may do or say things he would not in ordinary life. The suspected reason for this suggestible state is the same one that makes the subconscious believe that the seemingly impossible events in dreams are real while they are "occurring." One method of hypnotic induction is the Direct Gaze method, a powerful technique that requires much concentration on the part of the hypnotist. The Direct Gaze method is hypnosis induction that uses only the eyes of the hypnotist.

Ask the subject to stand up straight, with her weight evenly distributed.

Tell the subject to look directly in front of him. Point to the area just under your right eye and tell him to focus his gaze there. Stare back at the subject, maintaining strong, unwavering eye contact. Do not blink while you are looking at the subject.

Count down backward very slowly from 5. Maintain your gaze without blinking. In between numbers, tell the subject that her eyes are drooping, her eyes are getting heavy, and finally that her eyes are closing.

Say the words "Sleep now" once you see the subject getting droopy. Be prepared to catch the subject and put him in a chair or on the floor, as his body will fall completely limp.

Repeat this passage to the subject once her eyes are closed: "You are now in a calm and pleasant state of hypnosis. There is nothing in the world that will interrupt your pleasant state until I tell you to leave it. I want you to listen to every word I say."

Tell the subject what you would like him to do. This can be anything from losing weight or quitting smoking to eating an onion as if it were an apple. If you are not a trained hypnotist, express caution when speaking to your subject in this state. You must talk with your subject ahead of time to determine what the subject would like to be influenced to do (or not do).

Bring the subject out of her hypnotic state. Say something along the lines of, "When I clap my hands, you will wake fresh and new, with your new powers ingrained inside you and a feeling of rest and relaxation."

Allow the patient to lie down for several minutes following the hypnosis and ask him to reflect on his experience.

Tip

Hypnosis is most effective when administered by a doctor or professional hypnotherapist.
