How to Flat Tow a Jeep CJ-5

When your Jeep CJ-5 breaks down and it's too costly to call a tow truck, the next best option is to get a another vehicle to flat tow your Jeep to the shop for repairing. Flat towing involves a tow strap looped around the towing vehicle's rear axle and the other end of the strap looped around the front axle of the Jeep CJ-5.

• Looped tow strap

Instructions

1. Loop the tow strap around the rear axle of your towing vehicle. Avoid wrapping the strap around any brake lines or hoses.

2. Loop the other end of the tow strap around the front axle of the Jeep. Avoid wrapping the strap around any brake lines or hoses.

3. Place the Jeep CJ-5 in neutral. Have your assistant turn on the hazard lights in the Jeep and sit in the drivers seat for steering and braking purposes while you flat tow it. Your goal is to keep the tow strap tight at all times to avoid the strap jerking the Jeep when you get slack in the strap when going down a hill for example.

4. Turn on the hazard light in the towing vehicle.

5. Put the towing vehicle in a low gear and drive a maximum of 25 mph. Take wide turns to ensure the Jeep doesn't go in the ditch.
