Instructions

    • 1

Soak the black rice seeds in a container of room temperature water for 24 hours before planting. Sieve off any that float or look deformed, as they are not viable.

    • 2

Strain off the water and place the seeds in a covered container in a sunny spot where they can warm up to 80 degrees Fahrenheit for 24 hours.

    • 3

Spread an inch of well-rotted compost with a shovel and then a rake over a prepared planting surface that you have tilled and cleared of all weeds.

    • 4

Plant the black rice seeds over the compost at the rate of about one seed for every 9 inches, leaving room for the plant to grow, using a grid system to keep the planting uniform.

    • 5

Water the seed every day until the rice has sprouted, or for about a week. Allow the soil to dry out around the seedlings between waterings and then flood the area until the water covers the soil about an inch deep.
