How to Sand Your Lawn

Lawn sanding helps correct low spots and create a level growing surface.

Sanding a lawn is not a common practice for lawn maintenance. The main purpose for sanding a lawn is to fill uneven spots in the soil. Uneven spots can result in damaged turf and root systems from pooling water, which floods the lawn. Sand works well for filling these uneven spots, as it is easy to spread and quickly remedies the situation. With this procedure, called topdressing, you can use sand to fill bare spots, although the sand can wash away during heavy rainstorms.

Things You'll Need

• Shovel
• Broom

Instructions

1. Shovel sand into any low spots around your lawn. Add no more than 1/2 inch of sand at one time.

2. Sweep any excess sand off the grass using a broom. Make sure that any sand sifts through the existing turf outside the low spot you are filling.

3. Water and maintain the grass as necessary.

4. Add a second layer of sand once the lawn grows through the first layer of sand.

5. Repeat the process until you have filled in the low spot on the lawn.

Tips & Warnings

• Constantly adding sand to your lawn can result in adding weed seeds or diseases to your current lawn turf. This will result in doing more harm than good, as you will now have to correct these issues in addition to leveling out the lawn.
