How to Remove the Carpet on a Chevy Caprice
The Chevy Caprice has been a popular vehicle over the years since Chevrolet first introduced it in 1965 as an affordable luxury car. When sales stalled in 1996, Chevrolet discontinued the classic Caprice. But current owners maintain a fondness for their old favorite and prefer to replace the aging interior rather than replace the car itself. You can remove a Caprice carpet and install a new one in just a few hours.

1
Pop off the plastic covers from four bolts holding the front bench seat to the floor, using a screwdriver, if necessary. If the seats are attached to tracks, move the seat to the rear before undoing the bolts. Unscrew the bolts with a socket wrench and remove the bench seat from the passenger compartment.

Unscrew the front seat belt bolts from the floor. These may also have plastic caps that you may need to pop off first with a screwdriver. Shoulder belts attached to the side pillar between the front and rear passenger doors do not need to be removed for taking out old carpet.

Reach beneath the bottom cushion of the rear seat and find the metal bar running across the seat. Pull down on the bar and out to release the rear cushion. You need to pull the bar on the right and left side of the seat. Once loosened, the rear cushion pulls out and you can remove the rear seat belts with a socket wrench. The bolts for the rear back cushion are also exposed for removal.

Unscrew the door sill plates from the front and rear passenger doorways. Remove the screws holding the kick panels beneath the front dash with a screwdriver. Once you remove the door sill plates and kick panels, the carpet should pull up on all sides. However, it may be necessary to loosen the trim on the floor at the side pillar to completely remove the carpet.

Grab each corner of the carpet and roll it toward the center of the vehicle, starting with the driver's corner. The carpet should come out as a single piece. Retain the old carpet until the new carpet is fully installed.

Tips & Warnings
If installing new carpet, lay the old carpet on top of the new carpet. Use the old carpet as a template for cutting holes in the new carpet for seat belts, seat fastening bolts and other fixtures.
