How Can I Become a Publicist?
A career as a publicist may at first seem like a glamorous endeavor, full of club openings, celebrity events and interactions with the press. However, the reality of this job is that many days -- and nights -- are spent reading press releases, dealing with difficult clients and solving problems. Getting into this career not only requires knowledge of the public relations field, but also the ability to multitask, learn new responsibilities quickly and regularly handle stressful situations.

Obtain the proper educational credentials. While this career choice doesn't require a college degree, it certainly helps if you want to get a job with a reputable public relations firm. The skills you learn while seeking a degree, such as press release writing, media relations and business management, may prove invaluable.

Seek out a publicist internships. An internship provides you with real world experience that you can build on as you work towards becoming a full-time publicist. You can either intern with an independent publicist or with a larger public relations firm. The more positions you can learn during your internship, the more well rounded you will be when you embark on your own career.

Get to know the area where you work. This is key for a successful publicist as you need to have good relations with the local media as well as your local business community. Your clients depend on these relationships to get them good press and access to certain perks; it is your job to provide all of this for them. Therefore, spend time getting to know your community as this will serve you well in your career.

Market your services. For publicists, one of the best ways to do this is through word of mouth. The happier you make your clients, the more willing they will be to send other people in their same circle your way. Networking is also important. Attend industry events and make it a point to pass out plenty of business cards for anyone interested in taking advantage of your services.
