DIY Screen Goo

Making your own projector screen at home is not at all difficult as you use the proper supplies. While most ordinary paint is unable to provide the right texture or color to display movies or videos, Screen Goo is specially formulated for projection. Screen Goo is used in home theaters, businesses, schools and in virtually any environment using a projection screen. You can make your own version of Screen Goo at home.

Instructions

  1. Planning

    • 1

Calculate the amount of Screen Goo needed for your projection screen. You will need enough Screen Goo for both the base coat and topcoat. Just over one quart covers about 50 sq. ft. in two average coats, depending on the surface. A more textured or absorptive surface requires more Goo. Use the Goo selector on the Goo website under "Which Goo?" for additional help.

    • 2

Choose from "Reference White," "High Contrast" or "Max Contrast" Screen Goo formulas. The color varies with each type, with the reference white being appropriate for lower contrast projectors and the high contrast and max contrast being used for the higher contrast projectors. You can find a reference chart at Goo Systems Global (see resources) that will help determine the proper formula.

    • 3

Purchase the amount of Screen Goo that you calculated, choosing the formula you determined.

    Application

    • 4

Pour the paint into a paint tray. Use a paint roller to apply the base coat layer of Screen Goo to the projection screen. Use short vertical strokes, going from the top to the bottom of the screen. Use just enough paint to cover the surface. Allow the first layer time to dry (about 1 to 1.5 hours).

    • 5

Use the paint roller to apply a second layer of base coat using short vertical strokes. Allow the second base coat time to dry (at least 1 to 1.5 hours).

    • 6

Roll on the first layer of topcoat using the same method you used to apply the base coat layers. Allow the first topcoat time to dry (1 to 1.5 hours).

    • 7

Roll on the final topcoat of Screen Goo. Allow a minimum of 1 to 1.5 hours for drying.
