How to Measure Teleflex Steering Systems for Boats
Teleflex manufactures steering cable systems for inboard and outboard boats. The steering cable attaches to the steering wheel to turn the motor. When you turn the steering wheel, the propeller pushes through the water and propels the boat in the same direction. Measuring a boat correctly for the steering cable ensures that it will be long enough so it does not break and short enough to avoid play in the steering wheel.

Outboard Boats
-
1
Place the tip of a measuring tape on the exterior driver's side of the boat at the throttle connection. Stretch the measuring tape in a straight line to the transom. Note this measurement.
-
2
Measure the width of the outboard motor top and divide by two to find the center. Place the measuring tape tip on the center of the motor and stretch it to the driver's side on the transom. Note this measurement as well.

3
Add the measurements from Steps 1 and 2, and then add another 4 feet. Round your answer up to the next whole foot. This is the required length of the steering cable.

Place the tip of a measuring tape on the driver's side exterior on the transom. Stretch the tape forward, down the side to the throttle connection. Note this number as well.

Add your measurements from Steps 1 and 2, and round the number up to the next foot. Order a Teleflex steering cable in this length.

Tips & Warnings
Steering cables for outboard motors include an additional 4 feet of length for the loop near the motor. This gives enough cable for the motor to turn entirely left or right while steering without breaking the cable.
