How to Get a Business License in New York City

Many businesses that intend to operate within the New York City limits will require a business license before they can open their doors or provide services. City business licenses are issued by the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs. Some of the businesses that require licenses include: vendors, businesses that involve food service, tow truck companies, arcades and discos.

      Use the "License and Permit" wizard on the New York City Business Express website (see Resources). This tool will help you determine whether you business requires a license at all and if so, which license your business should apply for. The tool will also provide you with any permits that your business may need to apply for.

      Obtain an application for the specific permit that your business requires. Business owners can apply for business licenses online using the "Business Toolbox" application on the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs website (see Resources). Business owners may also contact the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs and request a paper application by calling: 212-NEW-YORK.

      Complete the business license application. Provide information about your business, such as its registered address, a description of the business activities (if required) and the name and contact information for the business's owner or registered agent. All business licenses must be accompanied by a license fee that is specific to the industry license that is being applied for. Completed applications can be submitted online or in person at the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs Office located at 42 Broadway, 5th Floor; New York, NY 10004.
