How to Define a Registered Agent for a LLC in Virginia
A registered agent is a business or individual designated to receive official mail or service of process for a business. All limited liability companies (LLC) registered in the Virginia are required to designate or define a registered agent. The Virginia Secretary of State offers an online tool that allows you to define or change the registered agent for your LLC. There is no charge to file the required document defining the registered agent for your LLC.

Open a Web browser on your computer and go to the Virginia Secretary of State SCC eFile Web page (see Resources).

Select the option to "Create a SCC eFile user account." Click the "Submit" button. If you already have an account, you can skip this step. Follow the prompts and enter the requested information to create your account. As part of the sign up process, you will select a user name and password to access your account.

Return to the Virginia Secretary of State SCC eFile Web page and select the "Log into SCC eFile" option. Click the "Submit" button.

Select the option "Change a Registered Agent/Office."

Enter the required information about your LLC's registered agent including the name of the individual or business and the full mailing address of the registered agent.

Click the "Submit" button. You have now defined the registered agent for your Virginia LLC.
