How to Refill Thermacell Cartridges
ThermaCell cartridges are filled with butane. They are mainly used as a heat source for items such as cordless hair straighteners, curling irons and insect repellent devices. ThermaCell cartridges can be refilled or replaced by the manufacturer, and it is possible to refill them yourself.

- Pliers
- Empty ThermaCell cartridges
- Electric drill with 1/8-inch bit
- 1 can of butane

Take the empty cartridge, firmly twist the brass valve with the pliers. Carefully pull the valve out of the cartridge.

Find the check valve, which should should be on the inside wall of the cartridge. Use the hole that was made by the removal of the brass valve to find the check valve. Place the cartridge on a flat surface, take the drill and carefully pierce the cartridge, drill deep enough to disengage the valve.

Use the pliers to place the brass valve back into the cartridge. Twist the valve to make sure it is firmly in place.

Push the butane cylinder tube into the brass valve. Make sure the cylinder tube is pointing downward. Push the tube to start filling the cartridge. Allow the cartridge to fill three-quarters of the way and stop. The cartridges should now be safe to starting using.

Tips & Warnings
Butane is a flammable liquid, so you should never refill a cartridge near an open flame.
