How to Replace a Fan Shroud Assembly

How to Replace a Fan Shroud Assembly thumbnail
Replacing your computer's fan shroud assembly is not too tricky.

The fan shroud is a small tube that extends from the processor's cooling fan to the processor chip. When your computer's CPU (central processing unit) is processing software data, it is heating up at the same time. Your processor's fan shroud moves heat from the processor to the cooling fan to prevent your processor from overheating. Replacing the fan shroud assembly requires you to partially dismantle the casing on your computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your computer. Unplug the power cord and any external devices connected to the computer. Position the computer tower so the back panel is facing you. Lay the computer on the side opposite its removable side panel.

    • 2

Remove the Phillips thumb screws, or disengage the retaining levers securing the side panel in place. Remove the side panel to reveal the inside of your computer. Touch an unpainted metal surface to discharge static electricity from your body. This prevents electrical damage to your motherboard caused by static electricity.

    • 3

Locate the fan shroud attached to the back panel from inside the computer. Remove the Phillips screws, or disengage the fan shroud's retention clips with a flat-head screwdriver. Lift the shroud out of the computer and set it aside.

    • 4

Insert the new fan shroud in place of the old one. Reattach the Phillips screws, or simply press down on the shroud until it snaps into place.

    • 5

Reattach the side access panel. Reconnect all cables and devices to your computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear an ESD (electrostatic discharge) strap as added protection against static electricity.
