How to Modify Your Free-Standing Speed Bag Platform
Modifying a free-standing speed bag platform depends on the platform model. Some platforms have the speed bag in a fixed position, which makes adjusting the height more difficult. Other models are built to be adjustable. To determine whether any adjustment is necessary, stand facing the speed bag. Raise your hand and touch the speed bag. Your elbow should be extended just beyond being parallel to the floor.
Things You'll Need
- Free-standing speed bag platform
- Plywood
- Duct tape
- Measuring stick or tape
- Saw
- Drill
Instructions

Modifying an Adjustable Platform
-
1
Remove the speed bag from its hook to prevent the bag from getting in the way.
-
2
Place one hand against the underside of the speed bag's base. Use the other hand to grip the knob and turn it to the left to loosen it.
-
-
3
Guide the base up or down until the base is a few inches above the top of your head.
-
4
Tighten the knob to lock the base back into place. Reattach the speed bag to make sure it is at an appropriate height.
Modifying a Short, Non-Adjustable Platform.
-
5
Measure how far the speed bag is from your desired height. Leave the bag hanging to do this.
-
6
Cut out small squares of plywood equal in size to the leg(s) of the platform. The number of legs and the height that must be added will determine how many squares you must cut.
-
7
Tape the squares together if you need to stack more than two pieces of plywood on top of one another.
-
8
Place the wood under the legs of the platform.
Modifying a Tall, Non-Adjustable Platform
-
9
Measure the area of the platform from which the speed bag is hanging. On most models, there will be four nuts and bolts in the shape of a square anchoring the platform to the rest of the apparatus. Measure only the area around the screws, going an inch or so past them. If it is just one or two screws, measure an area in a small square around them.
-
10
Draw the square that you measured in step one and cut it out from the plywood.
-
11
Place the square against the screws and mark where the holes must be drilled.
-
12
Drill the holes using a corresponding bit the same width as the screws attaching the base to the platform.
-
13
Place the square on top of the speed bag base and reattach the base to the platform.
