Insure your car and health before an unexpected accident occurs.

There are many websites set up to help you compare insurance plans online. They operate by contacting major companies at the same time to get a rate quote based on the information that you input. Once you have the rates in front of you, you can consider which deductible, plan and level of coverage is within your budget and right for you. Another benefit of comparing insurance plans online is that you can see exactly how much your rate increases with each additional coverage level.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine what the insurance laws of your state are, if applicable. You can go to the website of your department of motor vehicles to find the requirements for a vehicle or discuss the level of home coverage you need with your mortgage holder. The requirements vary from state to state. Before you begin to compare plans online, know what level of insurance you need to purchase.

    • 2

Select a website that compares multiple insurance providers at the same time (see Resources). Enter your name, address, vehicle information and license information. If you're applying for health or home insurance, you will have to give specifics about the condition of your health and your house. The more information you provide, the more accurate your quote will be.

    • 3

Print out the list of coverages. It should show the name of each insurance company that has been surveyed as well as the prices that are being offered to you.

    • 4

Navigate to the websites of individual insurance companies. Request an online quote. Put in your address, license and vehicle information if you're shopping for auto insurance. Include specific information about your health and home if you're shopping for health or property insurance. Print out each offer, if it's different from what you were offered on the comparison site.

    • 5

Decide which plans offer you the most. Consider the level of coverage, the deductible amount and the installment payments. Call the insurers who most interest you and ask if they offer any additional discounts for a clean driving record, public service careers or good grades, if any of these situations apply to you. You may be able to get an even lower rate than the one quoted online.
