How to Troubleshoot ScanSnap

The ScanSnap is a hand-held portable scanner that connects directly to a personal computer or laptop. To scan with the ScanSnap you feed each item through the portable scanner; it appears on the computer screen and allows you to save the scanned document to any file on your computer. As with anything electronic, ScanSnap scanners have had their share of problems. Most problems have a quick fix and require different troubleshooting techniques to resolve.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the USB cord that connects the scanner to the computer if the scanner is not powering on. If the scanner is plugged into a USB port, the port could be the problem. Switch USB ports on the computer.

    • 2

Open the paper chute or check to make sure the chute is opened if the scanner will not power on while plugged into a working USB port on the computer.

    • 3

Install the ScanSnap manager -- a CD that comes with the scanning device -- on your computer if the scanner is not recognized on the computer or isn't scanning properly. If the CD is installed, check for an update at the manufacturer's website listed in the user's manual.

    • 4

Clean the scanner with an electronic wipe or can of air if the paper is not going through the scanner properly or gets jammed. A dirty scanner lens can also cause vertical lines to appear in copied images even if the paper doesn't get jammed.

    • 5

Adjust the brightness of a scanned document by selecting the "Scanning" tab in the ScanSnap manager, followed by "Option." Save the settings. You can also choose only to scan in black-and-white or color when adjusting the brightness.
