Troubleshooting an Epson Stylus Color Printer

Epson Stylus printers use inkjet technology to spray tiny droplets of ink onto the paper to create an image. Problems with the printers are often related to the ink jets becoming clogged and causing poor print quality. Other issues can be related to error messages appearing on the display, power, and the ink running out. These problems can be corrected by following some basic troubleshooting steps.

Plug the printer into the wall socket and the computer if the printer won't turn on. The larger diameter cable goes to the wall and the thinner cable connects between the printer and a USB jack on the computer. Check the condition of the cable to make sure it's not frayed and that it's in good working order before plugging it in.

Look for an "Error" light on the front of the printer if you run into problems printing--for example, on the Stylus CX3200, this light is to the left of the display. If the light is illuminated, read the message on the screen. It should tell you what's wrong in plain language. Follow the instructions to correct the issue.

Print a nozzle check pattern if the output deteriorates. Press the button marked "Menu" on the panel until "Nozzle Check" appears, then press the "Color Copy" button. Check the results and replace the cartridges if output is poor.

Press the "Menu" button until "Change Cartridge" appears if you need to change the ink. Press the "Color Copy" button and the cartridges will slide over to a change position. Lift the scanner lid and unclip the cartridge. Insert new cartridges--color is on the right and black on the left. The Epson Stylus will start priming the cartridge and after about 30 seconds the printer will be ready again. Try another check pattern to verify output.
