How To Change a Vendor ID

How To Change a Vendor ID thumbnail
An EIN vendor ID number helps the IRS process information.

Since businesses in the United States must of course pay taxes, the IRS has established a business taxpayer number system called the EIN (Employer Identification Number). Some small businesses, particularly those that are not incorporated or that have a sole owner do not have to get this number. But it may be best to do so. The EIN speeds the IRS processing and handling of your money and documents. If you ever change the name of your business or its legal status, you might decide to change the EIN number as well for legal purposes.

Instructions

    • 1

Mail a letter to the IRS if you are a sole proprietor. This letter should explain the name change and include the previous name as well as the new one. Sign the letter and have it notarized.

    • 2

Put a checkmark in the "Name Change" box when you file a return as a corporation or a partnership.

    • 3

File out form SS-4 again to get a new EIN. Mail the form to the IRS to receive your new EIN.
