How to Become a Dump Truck Driver in Wisconsin
Anyone wanting to drive a dump truck in Wisconsin must obtain a commercial driver's license, or CDL. Before doing any commercial truck driving, a Wisconsin resident has to be an adult and hold a valid license to to drive cars and light trucks. CDL training is available from truck driving schools, but it is not necessary for a truck driver operating a dump truck. Proper licensing and employment will put a driver behind the wheel of a dump truck in Wisconsin.

1
Obtain and study the appropriate CDL manual for the type of vehicle you wish to drive. Visit the CDL manual download page on the Wisconsin Department of Transportation website (see Resources). The manual for general, air brakes, tankers, combinations and passenger transport vehicles provides the information you will need to pass the knowledge test for driving most dump trucks. This information will offer introductory commercial driver training to an inexperienced truck driver.

Take and pass the Wisconsin Department of Transportation knowledge test for commercial truck driving. The test is administered via touch-screen computers available at most state DMV offices. Appointments are not necessary, but you will need an hour to an hour and a half to complete the test while the office is open. Pay the license fees for your CDL instruction permit. The permit allows commercial truck driving for CDL training.
