A family is responsible for finding a home in a timely manner after receiving a voucher.

Low-income families in Connecticut can apply for housing through the local public housing authorities. The low-income housing program, or Section 8, provides a voucher that a family can use to rent a home of their choice. To qualify for a voucher, a family must meet the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's income guidelines. A voucher can be used to pay up to 70 percent of a family's monthly rent.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the local public housing authority (PHA) in Connecticut using the list provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (see Resources).

    • 2

Contact the PHA at the phone number listed and ask if applications are currently being accepted for low-income housing.

    • 3

Visit the PHA and request an application for low-income housing. You may need to provide picture identification to receive an application.

    • 4

Complete and submit the application to the PHA office. The application can be filled out in the office or completed at home and mailed to the address on the form. After the application is processed, you will be placed on a waiting list.

    • 5

Fill out the information packet you should receive when you reach the top of the waiting list. The packet asks for information about everyone in the household. The information you provide is checked to determine if you qualify for the low-income housing program. The packet must be mailed in by the date specified.

    • 6

Attend an informational session at your local PHA. You will receive your housing voucher during the session.
