How to Recover a Leather Reatta Steering Wheel
Nothing shows a neglected car interior quite like a wornout leather steering wheel. A worn and dirty leather steering wheel will look and feel grimy and discolored, and can even have a rotten smell. Replacing a damaged and worn leather Reatta steering wheel can be expensive. Fortunately, leather repair can be done at home. Your wornout leather steering wheel can be recovered and fixed up so it looks like it just came off the car lot.
Things You'll Need
- Drop cloth
- Rubbing alcohol
- Acetone
- Ammonia
- Water
- Cloth
- Fine grain sandpaper
- Leather filler
- Adhesion promoter
- Leather dye
- Satin leather finish

Place a drop cloth around the steering column and cover the dashboard to prevent any spray from getting on your car's interior.

Mix rubbing alcohol, acetone, ammonia and water together in a spray bottle in equal amounts. Keep the windows of your car open and wear a face mask, as the fumes from this spray are unhealthy. Spray the solution on the leather steering wheel. Wipe the leather really well with a cloth to remove any grease and grime and also to soften and smooth out the surface of the leather.

Smooth out the surface of the leather using fine grain sandpaper. Wipe any particles away with a cloth after sanding.

Fill in any small holes or scrapes using leather filler. Leave the filler to dry.

Apply leather adhesion promoter to the wheel by rubbing it over the steering wheel lightly and leaving it to dry. Rub or spray the leather dye onto the steering wheel. Leave it to dry.

Spray a layer of leather satin finish over the steering wheel to give it a nice shine and to protect it from wear.
