Playing a DVD in a vehicle legally requires engaging the emergency brake.

Modern mobile audio DVD players are designed to legally play DVDs in view of the front seat passengers with the parking brake engaged. These devices come equipped with wiring leads to tell the in-dash receiver when the brake is engaged, allowing the player to display a DVD image. Wiring the parking brake switch is part and parcel of a normal installation, and enhances driver safety along with compliance with the law.

  • Vehicle schematic (optional)
  • Aftermarket wiring harness
  • Insulated t-tap clamps
  • Insulated crimp connectors
  • Wire crimp tool
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Screwdrivers (Philips, Allen, Torx)
  • Ratchet and socket set

Instructions

    • 1

      Wire the radio to the aftermarket wiring harness by following the color coding on the label of the DVD receiver, and the packaging of the aftermarket harness. Crimp the pre-stripped leads together using the insulated crimp connectors and crimp tool.

      Access the emergency brake switch wire in the vehicle, by removing any obstructing panels with the correct screwdrivers, and/or the ratchet and socket set. Consult a vehicle schematic if necessary to locate the screw and bolt locations needed for removal.

      Route the emergency/parking brake wire from the DVD receiver's harness (typically white and green) to the emergency brake switch. The wire leading to the switch is negative ground, so there should only be one.

      Slide the green and white wire coming from the receiver's harness and the emergency brake wire together inside the t-tap. Fold over the t-tap, ensuring both wires are constrained within the metal teeth. Snap the connector fully with the needle nose pliers.

      Replace any panels removed to gain access the the emergency brake wiring.
