DIY Ariens Snowblower Adjustments
Ariens snow blowers are well-crafted machines that are easily adjusted to ensure that they always meet your specific snow-throwing requirements. Depending on the specific conditions under which your snow blower operates, you may need to make several adjustments prior to each use. Adjustments are easy, and will not only make your machine more efficient at accomplishing the specific task at hand, but will extend the operational life of your investment as well. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Adjust the fuel shut off valve to the "Open" position prior to starting the engine. Always return the valve to the "Closed" position when the machine is not in use, or is being transported. The valve is located on the right side of the engine, just below the fuel tank. Turning the valve clockwise puts the fuel supply to the "On" position.

2
Inflate each tire to 20 lbs. pressure, or as directed on the sidewall of the tire prior to operation. Set the choke knob prior to starting the engine. Turn the handlebar mounted knob clockwise to close the choke (the starting position). Return the knob to the "Open" position by turning it counterclockwise to operate the snow blower after it has warmed up to operational temperature.

3
Set the appropriate throttle position for the conditions you encounter. The handlebar mounted throttle controls engine speed, and has four settings: "Fast" (for normal operation or warm starting); "Partial Throttle" (for slow operation); "Slow" (for cold weather or new start ups); and, "Stop" (to turn the engine off).

4
Rotate the discharge chute so that snow is discharged away from the operator and in a safe direction. The chute rotates 220 degrees, and is controlled by either an electric switch or a hand operated crank, both of which can be located on the handlebars, depending on your model. The chute should be adjusted prior to starting up the engine. Adjust the chute deflector plate which controls the snow throw distance from the chute. Turn the securing knob counterclockwise, then slide the plate to the desired position. Re-tighten the knob.

5
Set the differential lock knob located inside the left wheel hub for obtaining the best traction when throwing deep snow. Both wheels must move simultaneously. When turning the machine frequently, you may adjust the axle lock so that the right wheel may be rotated freely, which is helpful during light snow conditions or while transporting the machine. Pull and turn the knob to the right to engage the axle lock.

6
Adjust the auger housing runners by parking the snow blower on a flat level surface. Insert a spacer of the desired thickness under the center of the scraper blade. Loosen the hex nuts that secure the runner, then slide the runners to the ground. Allow 1/8 inch clearance between the blade and ground for smooth surface operation, and allow up to 1 1/2 inch clearance for gravely or uneven terrain conditions. Re-tighten the hex nuts.
-
7
Adjust the scraper blade by tipping the machine backwards onto the handlebars, then loosening the scraper blade retaining nuts. Slide the runners to the fully raised position and reposition the scraper blades so that they are flush with the runners. Re-tighten the locking nuts.

8
Adjust the throttle lever free play by removing the hair pin from the adjustment pivot pin. Remove the pin from the bracket. Put the throttle in the "Fast" reverse speed position. Firmly pull the shifting rod straight towards the handlebars as far as it will go. Thread the adjustment pivot pin into the shift rod until it meets with the small mating hole on the throttle. Reinsert the pivot pin. Secure with the hairpin.

Tips & Warnings
Keep in mind that when tire pressure is measured indoors at room temperature, it will not be an accurate measure of tire pressure in a sub-freezing environment (outdoors).
The rotating impeller and augers can cause serious injury. Keep hands, feet and clothing away from them at all times.
