How to Add Sand to a Sand Filter
A good number of today's backyard swimming pools employ the use of a sand filter to ensure the water is clean and safe for swimming. Sand filters, as their name suggests, use sand to filter debris from the water before returning it to the pool. Over time, it may become necessary to change the sand in your sand filter. Scoop out the existing sand with a plastic cup carefully.

Rinse off the laterals of any dirt or debris and place them back in the tank.

Fill the tank halfway full of water and add the amount of sand described by the manufacturer in the owners manual a bag a time.

Level off the sand with your hands between each bag of sand.

Put the filter tank back together and start the sand filter in backwash mode.

Tips & Warnings
Do not add all of the sand at one time. It could damage the laterals in the bottom of the tank.
