How to Start Homeschooling in Indiana

How to Start Homeschooling in Indiana thumbnail
Indiana lets homeschooling parents select their own curriculum.

Deciding to homeschool your child is a big decision that requires planning and preparation. Like most states, Indiana has laws and restrictions regulating homeschooling families. Follow state guidelines when making a plan to homeschool your child to ensure that the state knows your child is being homeschooled.

Instructions

    • 1

Research homeschooling options. Before you begin homeschooling, you must select a curriculum and develop an educational plan. Indiana law allows homeschooling families to select their own curriculum and does not require adherence to grade level guidelines that public schools must follow. If you are pulling your child out of a state school, you may request a copy of their school records to help plan an appropriate course of study.

    • 2

Notify the state of your plans to homeschool. When you are ready to begin homeschooling, you must let the state know by completing an online home school enrollment report form. You must provide contact information and the grade that you are enrolling your child in. If you are transferring your child from a public school, you must provide documentation of your decision in writing to the school's principal.

    • 3

Keep good attendance records. Indiana law requires 180 days of school attendance for all students between the ages of 7 and 17. While you may select which days to teach and the length of your school day, you must create an attendance record that can be presented to state officials upon request.
