Plaster finishes vary depending on the object that you use for texturing.

The hardest part about installing or repairing plaster walls is not spreading on the plaster. It is creating an acceptable texture on the walls and keeping it uniform throughout the room. There are many items that can be used to create texture, and the choice is completely up to you. Experimenting with different methods is the best way to decide what you like, and it will allow you to practice before you apply it to the wall. Use scrap wood boards to test finishing techniques. Instructions

    • 1

Spread the final coat of plaster on the walls in small sections so that it doesn't dry out before the texture is applied. Spread on with a plaster knife or trowel.

    • 2

Touch the tool to the plaster. This varies depending on the tool being used. With a trowel, you can create a smooth flat finished wall with no texture. You can also press into the plaster and swirl the trowel around so that it creates lines and depressions. Lightly dab a sponge into the plaster to make a rough texture. Press it lightly into the plaster all over the wall. Paint rollers can create a similar effect. Drag a paintbrush across the plaster for a lined look or press the bristles straight in for a speckled appearance. Let the raised speckles dry for a moment, then knock them down with a trowel lightly moved over the top.

Allow the plaster to dry overnight, then paint the walls the color of your choice to seal the plaster.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice before applying plaster to the actual walls until you get a feel for the technique and can create a consistent appearance.
