How to Customize Track Cleats

How to Customize Track Cleats thumbnail
Track spikes provide traction and grip to keep athletes from slipping.

Track athletes wear specialized shoes made of a lightweight material with a base plate at the forefoot. Spikes are inserted into this plate for improved traction on rubberized tracks to keep runners from slipping. Track and field spikes come in different lengths and types. For those who want to build their own cleats, whether for fun or for purchase and wear, Nike created a fun and interactive way to customize track cleats.

Instructions

  1. Customize Nike Track Cleats

    • 1

Visit the Nike ID website at http://nikeid.nike.com. Select either the Men's or Women's Tab and then select Track and Field from the drop-down menu.

    • 2

Select the Nike Zoom Ja ID Track and Field Shoe. As of November 2010, it is listed as $145.00 for the standard shoe and $165 for the limited edition gold shoe.

    • 3

Choose an already-created design or start with a blank shoe (the limited edition gold is an extra $20). Run the cursor over the areas of the shoe to select the color for the base, laces, and swoosh.

    • 4

Choose the desired base plate, either full-length or three-quarters length.

    • 5

Select either a Nike Swoosh symbol or a customized ID for the back of each shoe. Select the Swoosh color or follow the prompts for a customized ID with an 8-character max from A-Z and 0-9.

    • 6

Choose a gender, size and quantity number.

    • 7

Select either the Share Tab, meaning you can share your customized design as part of the Nike ID gallery and/or upload the design to your Facebook or Twitter page, or select the Save Tab, meaning you can save your design to either "Your Locker" or as Wallpaper.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are purchasing your customized cleats, they can take up to 4 weeks for delivery.

  • Different tracks and meets have different regulations for the length of spikes that they allow. It is a good idea to have extra cleats handy on race days to allow for loss or guideline violations.
