Wheatgrass is the immature plant form of common wheat. Many people enjoy the flavor of wheatgrass and grow it in the kitchen to blend into what they consider high-energy drinks. There is, however, no scientific evidence that wheatgrass therapy is effective, according to Dr. William T. Jarvis of the National Counsel Against Health Fraud. If for no other reason, grow wheatgrass because it's fun and easy. Kelp powder, mixed with other ingredients, helps prevent the mold commonly found growing with wheatgrass. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Bowl
  • Coarse sand
  • Potting soil
  • Nursery flat
  • Spray bottle
  • Kelp powder
  • Baking soda

Instructions

      Fill a small bowl with tepid water and place the wheat berries inside. Soak them in the water for eight hours.

      Combine equal parts of coarse sand and potting mix. Add water and stir the mixture until it is uniformly moist. Pour the mixture into a nursery flat and allow it to drain completely.

      Sprinkle the wheatgrass seeds thickly on top of the soil mixture. Cover with a 1/8-inch layer of sand.

      Fill the spray bottle with water and add 2 tbsp. of kelp powder and 1/4 tsp. of baking soda. Shake the bottle to mix the ingredients. Spray the sand layer with the mixture until it is moist.

      Keep the nursery flat in a shady area, misting with the kelp solution twice a day, until the seeds germinate. This should occur within one week.
