How to Refill a 1 Pound Propane Bottle thumbnail
Propane bottles can be refilled with propane tanks.

Propane is a gas that can be compressed into a liquid form and stored in bottles or tanks of varying sizes. Propane is often used to fuel grills, portable stoves and torches. Disposable propane bottles come in handy on camping trips. These bottles are often thrown away and new ones are purchased the next time you need them. However, you can save money and time by refilling a disposable propane bottle rather then disposing of it.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a propane tank refill adapter from your local hardware, camping supply store or online. It also can be referred to as a propane tank coupler.

    • 2

Attach the adapter to a 20- to 40-pound propane tank. The propane tank can be purchased from home improvement stores and gas stations. This tank must be between 65 and 75 degrees and never more than 85 degrees for safety.

    • 3

Place an empty 1-pound propane bottle in the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes. The bottle must chill to create a difference in pressure from the tank to the bottle.

    • 4

Remove the bottle from the freezer and connect it to the other end of the propane tank adapter.

    • 5

Turn the tank and the bottle upside down on a flat surface.

    • 6

Open the valve on the large tank for exactly one minute and then close the valve.

    • 7

Turn the large tank and the bottle right side up and disconnect the bottle.

    • 8

Remove the adapter from the tank and put it away until next time.

    • 9

Check the bottle for leaks by placing a small amount of a half liquid soap and half water mixture on the bottle opening and the relief valve. Dispose of the bottle in a safe manner if bubbles form, indicating a leak. Contact the place that you obtained the tank from if you are unsure as to the disposal method.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never refill a propane bottle that is damaged or rusted, not completely empty or does not have a pressure relief valve.

  • Never refill a propane bottle if you are not in a well-ventilated area, near an open flame, near smoke or with a gas other then propane.

  • If your propane tank adapter comes with instructions, you should follow them and only use these steps as a guideline.
