How to Grow a Joshua Tree From Seeds in a Pot
The Joshua tree, also called Yucca brevifolia, but is actually a member of the lily family. It thrives in hot, dry areas of the U.S., mainly Nevada, Arizona, southwest California and Utah. The tree is thought to have been named by the Mormons after the prophet Joshua in the Bible, according to the Desert USA website. Joshua trees can be propagated by planting the seeds in a pot any time of the year. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 10-inch diameter plant pot
- Potting soil
- Sand
- Joshua tree seeds
- Water
- Saucer
- Thermometer

Fill a 10-inch diameter plant pot 2/3 full of a 50-50 mix of potting soil and sand. Mix the two together well.

Place one or two Joshua tree seeds on top of the soil at 2 to 3 inches apart.

Cover the seeds with an additional 1/4-inch layer of the soil mixture.

Water the soil until it runs out of the bottom drainage holes.

Fill a saucer half full of water and set the plant pot into it. This will keep the soil moist until germination.

Place the pot in a location that maintains a temperature of 60 F or warmer.

Wait until the seeds germinate, which takes between 11 and 21 days. Remove the lower saucer and place the pot in a window that receives bright sunlight. Water only when the top of the soil feels dry and keep the seedlings at a temperature of 87 F or higher.

Tips & Warnings
You must typically order Joshua tree seeds online since they are not readily available at nurseries.
If both seeds in the pot germinate, wait until the seedlings are 1-1/4 inch tall and transplant one into another 10-inch diameter pot.
