How to Find the Engine Size on the Block of a CRX

Finding parts for your Honda CRX can be a tricky matter if you do not know the sub model or engine size. The CRX has ten different engine specifications, depending upon if the car was made in the United States or Japan. Finding out what engine is in a CRX will help you find the appropriate parts and limit your frustration and trips to the auto parts store when they do not fit.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the VIN number located on the driver's side just above the bottom edge of the windshield or on the plate or sticker on the driver's side inner door frame.

    • 2

Open the hood and look for identifying markings on the top of the engine. Write down any markings, such as "16 valve."

    • 3

Find the distributor cap, which is the part of the engine with spark plug wires leading from it to places across the top of the engine. Down the front of the engine on that side, there is a plate listing the engine code just before the engine goes down into the compartment. Write down the code under the VIN.

Navigate to CRXSI.com to look up the code you found. This listing will tell you the difference between the engines.

    • 5

Compare the VIN code from Thisoldhonda.org to double-check the engine code. This will also tell you what sub model you have, which will assist you in finding parts from auto parts stores.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is possible for most Honda engines to fit in a CRX, so you might see a Del Sol engine in an older CRX.

  • For a stock CRX, all models came with 1.5L engines except for the SI variant, which came with the 1.6L.

  • Double-check both the VIN and engine codes to ensure you buy the right parts.

  • Using the wrong parts in your engine can cause permanent damage.
