How to Redeem a United Airlines Flight Ticket Voucher

How to Redeem a United Airlines Flight Ticket Voucher thumbnail
United Airlines vouchers are easy to redeem.

United Airlines ticket vouchers --- usually obtained when being bumped from an overbooked flight --- are fairly easy to redeem but require customer service assistance. With a quick phone call to a United representative, you can book your free or discounted flight. United Airlines does not allow voucher redemption online as of December 2010.

Instructions

    • 1

Call United Airlines reservation services (within the United States) at (800) 864-8331. When the automated system answers, you can say, "Customer service," to be connected with an agent.

    • 2

Provide the agent with your voucher number and the reservation you want to book, including dates and times you want to travel. You can research itineraries on the United website (see Resources).

    • 3

Check your e-mail to get your e-ticket confirmation when you're done booking. United issues tickets electronically, so unless you request them, you will not receive paper tickets in the mail. Your voucher is now canceled and you cannot reuse or duplicate it for further travel.

    • 4

Return your free, paper-based ticket voucher to United. You can mail the voucher to United Airlines Discount Certificates, P.O. Box 6046, Dearborn, MI, 48121. You can also take the free ticket voucher to an airport ticket counter.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you aren't in a hurry to get to your destination, ask at check-in whether your flight is overbooked. Overbooked flights can result in the compensation of passengers willing to give up their seats. You may be able to obtain a voucher by volunteering.

if you book less than 15 days before your flight, you have no choice but to go to the airport within 24 hours of booking to get your vouchers applied to the ticket. If you miss the 24 hour deadline, they will cancel your ticket. When this involves driving a ways to the airport, parking and taking a shuttle to the terminal, taking a shuttle back, and paying parking fees, it is not fun. Make sure you book on a Friday if you can't afford to take off work.

Good luck... but it was a major pain for me to get ahold of a customer service representative. There's no simple direct path on the system (I called back 5+ times trying different paths). Simply saying "Customer Service" as this article suggests only leads to an entirely new set of questions that continues eventually to dead-ends telling you to email or go to the website. Hint: curse multiple times saying things like "i want to talk to a f*cking real person." The system must have a "rage tracker"... it'll eventually get you connected. Then be prepared to speak to an overseas call-center rep who doesn't know how to spell, confuses "b" and "d", etc. (At least they're friendly.) United has made this process as painful as possible to discourage people from using their vouchers. Also beware: if you book less than 15 days before your flight, you have no choice but to go to the...
