How to Use Coconut Oil Instead of Butter

How to Use Coconut Oil Instead of Butter thumbnail
Chill the oil to thicken it.

Coconut oil is used as a substitute in cooking for other oils and even butter. This substance can be tricky to cook with though because at any temperature above 76 degrees it turns to liquid. Keeping it at a lower temperature gives it the same smooth consistency as butter. It can be used the very same way you use butter in this form. One main reason people use this oil in place of butter is that it is lactose free. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Put the coconut oil in your refrigerator. Chill it until it thickens to the consistency of butter.

    • 2

Measure the same amount of coconut oil as you would butter. If the recipe calls for half a cup of butter, then use half a cup of thickened coconut oil.

    • 3

Make the food item as you normally would, continuing on with the recipe.

Tips & Warnings

  • Coconut oil does not have to be refrigerated after use, so if you want it in oil form for your next recipe, then cover it up and leave it out.
