My E Drive Won't Open
The E drive can be linked to many different devices that may be installed on your computer but, in computers that have built-in DVD or CD drives, "E" is generally the letter used to indicate that disc drive. When any drive on your computer fails to open, including the E drive, this is usually due to the computer failing to recognize the drive. In the case of a CD or DVD drive, the disc cannot be read by the computer and error messages, like Error 19 or Error 39, will likely appear when you try to access the drive.

1
Use any built-in maintenance and self-fix programs available for your computer to try to restore the drive first. On a Windows system, in which E often serves as the DVD or CD drive, you can update the system by going to "Start" then choosing "All Programs" then "Windows Update" and clicking "Install updates." If that fails to work, you can also use Windows' online diagnostic tool, Fixit, to try to correct the issue (see Resources).
-
2
Uninstall the drive from the computer if the diagnostic tools fail to find and eliminate the drive issue. To uninstall the device, go to "Device Manager" by clicking "Start," "Control Panel" and "Device Manager," and then click the plus sign by "Disk Drives."

3
Right-click the drive that is connected to the E drive. You will have to select by make and model, and select "Uninstall" from the context menu that comes up. When the warning message appears, click "Yes" to confirm that you want to uninstall.
-
4
Go to the "Start" menu again and choose "Restart" from the menu. If "Restart" does not appear in the list, click on the right-pointing arrow at the bottom corner of the "Start" menu and then click "Restart" from the additional menu that appears. Since the drive is installed on your computer already, when the computer restarts, it should recognize the drive and automatically install all of the necessary drivers and components back onto the computer.
