Graphic Design 101
Graphic designers combine words, images, color and texture to create messages for their clients in print and electronic media. While many graphic designers work in full time staff positions, others are self-employed freelancers. The field has undergone a revolution in recent years as almost all graphic design has gone digital and is created on computers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) expects the field to grow 13% between 2008 and 2018, with total employment reaching 323,100 individuals by 2018.

Graphic design starts with a message or idea to communicate. Decide what your graphic design will communicate. If you have a client, discuss with them what idea they would like to communicate. Write the words that will be used in the message, and pick an image to go with the words. The image could be a photo or illustration. Use images that enhance the message you want to communicate. Choose these design elements before starting your computer.

Open a file on your computer in a graphic design program. Name the file and save it. Fill in the words you will use in your design, now known as type. Try different typefaces. Look for a typeface that readily communicates your message and is consistent with the idea you are conveying. Import any illustrations or photo elements into the file. Now you have the basic elements of your graphic design in place.

Arrange the type and image elements in an aesthetically pleasing manner relative to each other. This is called a layout. The point is to create a good looking layout that communicates your message effectively. Experiment with different arrangements of the type and the images. Each element can be enlarged or made smaller and placed in different areas of the design until the most effective solution is found. Add elements of color if desired.
