1
Plan a new kitchen around the kitchen sink area. Select the cabinetry and sink space to be near a large window, if possible. Construct the kitchen with a triangle pattern from the sink to the stove to the refrigerator. Create this triangle so that fewer steps will be required during cooking.

Select appliances and cabinets. Choose the best appliances the budget will allow. Select cabinets to match the appliances in quality and style. Think in terms of sketching a wall space to center around the sink, dishwasher beside the sink and a kitchen island. Fit cabinets on both sides of the sink at the ceiling level and below the countertop space.

Sketch the wall area along the sink in detail. Transfer the measurements to graph paper to ensure everything will fit. Be sure to include a few artistic touches, such as overhead cabinets with all glass fronts. Change the wood finish of the cabinets from dark to light, if the kitchen is a remodel. Add special lighting over the sink area and an island area facing the sink.

Tear out old cabinets and fixtures to build a new kitchen in an old space. Start at the ceiling of the room to redo everything. Install recessed lighting, wall cabinets and new windows. Run new plumbing drain lines and water lines, if needed, along with new electrical wiring in the lower half of the room. Add counter space, lower cabinets and new wall covering next. Don't install flooring until everything else is complete.

Install special touches to enhance the kitchen. Add a wine rack, bar stools or wine refrigerator in the space. Consider covering the refrigerator door with wood to match the cabinets. Keep in mind that the family will enjoy the kitchen more if the cooking space is friendly and inviting. Build the space to include lots of natural light and uncluttered space.

Tips & Warnings
Ask a home improvement store adviser to review the kitchen plan. Make a detailed list of all purchases needed and the overall budget. Consider using granite tiles, for example, if a granite countertop is too costly.
Redo old cabinets, if the budget is limited. Put a new finish on the cabinets and replace the doors. Don't cut back on appliances or good flooring to save money. Use the cabinets at hand and replace them when finances allow.
