How to Convert Grams to Liquid Cups

How to Convert Grams to Liquid Cups thumbnail
Different materials have different densities.

Grams are a measurement of mass, while cups are a measurement of volume. To convert one to the other, you must find the material-specific density figure. This tells you how much mass is in a given volume of a substance. This is important because different materials can have vastly different densities, and thus the same number of grams will take up different amounts of cups. A cup of water, for example, weighs the same as about 784 cups of air. In addition to finding the density, you will need to determine what kind of cups are your target measurement: United States, Canadian or metric.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the mass of the material in grams. Measure accurately by placing a container on a scale and setting the scale to zero. Add the material to the container and record what the scale reads.

    • 2

Find the density of the substance. If you have a way of measuring the volume of the material, you can find the density by dividing the result of Step 1 by the volume. If not, you can look up the density of the substance in density tables. Either way, the density will have units of some measurement of mass per some measurement of volume.

    • 3

Multiply the density by the conversion factor between the volume unit given in the density figure and the cups that you are using. For example, if your density is given by mass per cubic centimeter, also called a milliliter, multiply by 236.59 ml/cup to convert the density into mass per United States cup. Multiply by 250 instead if you want to find metric cups, and 227.30 if you are using Canadian cups.

    • 4

Multiply the result from Step 3 by the conversion factor between grams and the given mass measurement. For example, if your density is given in milligrams, multiply by 0.001 g/mg. Now you have the density of the material in grams per cup.

    • 5

Divide the number of grams that you found in Step 1 by the result from Step 4. Pay attention to how the units cancel each other out. When dividing grams by grams per cup, the grams cancel. The resulting units are 1/(1/cup), or simply cups.
