Inspect every part of your property to assess the hail damage. This should be done even if you think there is no damage to the area. For a home, this means inspecting every room of the home and the outside of the home. As you are doing your inspection, be sure to take pictures or video footage of the damage.

Find a contractor to get an estimate for repairs to your property. Many insurance companies will provide you with a list of approved contractors in your community who will do an appraisal for free.

Call your insurance agent or the claims department of your insurance company (protocol will vary by insurance company). The number for your agent or the claims department should be listed on your insurance policy. If possible, try to contact the insurance agent within the first 24 to 48 hours of the hailstorm.

Advise the claims representative that you would like to report hail damage to your property. Provide the representative with the details of the claim, such as the date and time of the hailstorm, the parts of your property that were damaged, and the severity of the damage. Tell the agent whether or not your home is uninhabitable because of the damage. If the damage is to your vehicle, advise the agent whether or not your car is drivable. Give the representative your estimate of what it will cost to fix the property.

Wait to receive a claim number from the representative. Retain this claim number for future reference. It can be used to add updates and track the status of your claim.
