How to File for Dual Citizenship for Mexico in Chicago, Illinois

Mexicans who have become citizens of another country may wish to reclaim their Mexican citizenship by applying for dual nationality. Having dual nationality will allow Mexicans to strengthen their relationships at home and abroad. To apply for dual citizenship in Chicago, Illinois, you will need to visit the Mexican consulate, which is located on Michigan Avenue.

Instructions

1. Visit the Mexican consulate. In Chicago, the consulate is located on the second floor of the building at 300 N. Michigan Ave. You must be at least 18 years old and of sound mind.

2. Complete the application. The Mexican consulate in Chicago will provide you with an application to fill out with all of your vital information.

3. Present the consulate with your birth records. If you were born in the United States, you will need to present a certified copy of your American birth certificate and an original or certified copy of either your Mexican mother's or father's birth certificate. If you were born in Mexico, you will need a certified or original copy of your birth certificate.

4. Present your marriage certificate. If you are a married woman, you will need to provide a certified copy of your marriage license.

5. Present proof of your U.S. citizenship. You will need either your passport or your certificate of naturalization, an official picture ID -- driver's license, state ID or passport. You will also need to present two passport-size photos.

6. Wait for the reply. The Mexican consulate is the only institution that can complete this process. Once you have received Declaration of Mexican Nationality, you will be required to pay a $14 fee (as of 2010).
