How to Create a Road Map
If you are teaching children about reading a road map, you can help solidify the experience by providing the kids with an interactive craft related to maps. For example, you can show children how they can make their own road maps using a few craft materials. Once the kids are finished with their maps, they can use them to pretend to navigate from place to place using the map as a guide.
Instructions
-
-
1
Place a sheet of craft paper onto a desk or table top.
-
2
Draw a circle in the lower right-hand corner of the paper.
-
-
3
Draw two perpendicular lines inside the circle.
-
4
Write N at the top of the circle, E to the right of the circle, S at the bottom of the circle and W to the left of the circle. This will complete the compass rose for the map.
-
5
Draw large dots onto the map with a purple marker to represent large cities.
-
6
Draw medium dots onto the map with a red marker to represent smaller cities.
-
7
Draw small dots onto the map with a green marker to represent small towns.
-
8
Use a black marker to draw lines connecting the dots together. You can make the lines straight, curvy or zig-zagged.
-
9
Write the names of the cities and towns underneath the respective dots using a pen. The names can be made-up.
