How to Recycle Paper, Cans, Bottles and Plastic

Recycling helps save the environment.

Paper, cans, bottles and plastic are all recyclable. Instead of throwing them away, take the time to separate the materials and deliver them to a local recycling center. You'll help the environment and you may receive cash for the bottles and cans with redemption values.

Instructions

1. Separate paper, cans, bottles and plastic into four plastic bins with paper in one, cans in another, bottles in the third bin and plastic into the fourth bin. Separating the materials before recycling makes the process easier.

2. Telephone your local Department of Public Works to find out if curbside recycling is available in your area. The Earth911 website and 1-800-CLEANUP provide lists of recycling centers and additional information about recycling.

3. Place the bins on the curb ready for the curbside recycling. If curbside recycling is not available in your area, place the bins into the back of your car and drive to the recycling center.

Tips & Warnings

• Verify the hours of the recycling center before you go.

• Rinse out cans and bottles to avoid bugs and mold.

• Check how the recycling center would like the items sorted. At some centers, bottles and glass can be put in the same bin.
